Internship: Musée de la Photo, Antananarivo, Madagascar
Our PHD candidate Annette Becker completed an internship at the Musée de la Photo in Antananarivo, Madagascar, from October to December 2024.
The museum sees itself as an institution which, through archiving and digitizing historical photographs which were taken in Madagaskar between 1860 and 1960, contributes to the research, preservation, and communication of Malagasy history and cultural practices. The Musée de la Photo works in cooperation with well-known experts and institutions, including the historian Prof. Helihanta Rajaonarison from the University of Antananarivo, the Archives nationales de Madagascar, the Archives nationales d’Outre-mer (France), and the Musée d’ethnographie de Genève (Switzerland). To date, more than 100,000 historical photographs could be archived, which also form the basis for the regular exhibitions.
During her internship, Anette Becker was involved in all the areas of the preparation and realization of the exhibition “Maison des Vivants.” This involvement gave her insights into the process of archival work, curatorial practice, and the communication of cultural content in Madagascar.
