Tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Digital Literature and Methodology (salary group W1)
The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a
tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Digital Literature and Methodology
(salary group W1)
at the Department of Digital Humanities and Social Studies. The position is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of three years. Upon successful evaluation, the appointment will be extended for another three years. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to a full professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.
We seek to appoint a top early career scholar / scientist with an internationally visible profile in research and teaching. The candidate should develop outstanding expertise in the field. The professorship will focus on research into aesthetic-cultural symbol systems as highly complex multimodal artefacts. Against the backdrop of the global shift in media, the professorship will drive an extended understanding of literature including those forms with a collective authorship and diffuse boundaries between works. The professor should develop exemplary methods and procedures to come to grips with such artefacts, they should formulate new research questions for analog and digital text objects and they should sketch requirements for technical solutions that take the demands of cultural science-based literary research into consideration. Going beyond quantification and formalization, the Faculty seeks to appoint an expert who focuses on the hermeneutic added value of digital modelling and its visualization.
The professorship is integrated into the research training group 2806 “Literature and the public sphere in different contemporary spheres”. The professor will be based at the Department of Digital Humanities and Social Studies and will be expected to work in close partnership with other professorships in the Department specializing in the various symbol systems and data types. Depending on the specific profile of the successful candidate, the professor will be assigned secondary membership to another department in the Faculty.
The professor will be expected to participate in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Digital Humanities as well as certain other degree programs offered at the Faculty with modules on issues relating to digitalization (such as German Language and Literature, American Studies, Romance Studies, Book Studies, Media Studies, Sociology).
Successful candidates should demonstrate initial academic achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international standards. They should have substantial research experience abroad and/or experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and relevant teaching experience are also prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred.
No more than four years should have passed between the conferral of the doctoral degree and deadline of the call for applications; this period is extended to a maximum of seven years in the field of medicine or clinical psychology and may also be extended due to periods of supporting a family or caring for a family member. The date of the doctoral certificate is decisive.
The successful candidate should become actively involved in administering academic affairs and in developing strategic initiatives. FAU pursues a policy of intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be present during lecture periods.
